The Puputan of 1906: A Sacrifice for Dignity
At the dawn of the 20th century, Indonesia, including the island of Bali, was under the dominion of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), and later directly under the Dutch government. The proud and independent Balinese kingdoms fiercely resisted this colonization. After decades of broken treaties and military interventions, Dutch pressure became intolerable. In 1906, an incident involving a stranded ship provided the pretext for a full-scale invasion of Badung (Denpasar).
Facing the advancing colonial troops, members of the royal court of Badung, dressed in their finest attire and armed with kris (Balinese daggers), emerged from the palace. Rather than surrender, they engaged in a collective act of ritual suicide, the Puputan (meaning 'end' or 'completion' in Balinese), stabbing their families and themselves. Thousands of Balinese perished that day, an ultimate sacrifice to preserve their honor and dignity in the face of humiliating defeat. This act deeply marked Bali's history and became a symbol of cultural resistance.
