April 13, 1919:
1984: Operation Blue Star and the repercussions of a national tragedy
« If I were to shed my blood for the country, I would be the first to do so. »— Indira Gandhi, the day before her assassination, October 30, 1984.
The history of Punjab is marked by centuries of struggles and resilience, culminating in the founding of the Sikh Empire by Maharaja Ranjit Singh. After British colonization and the painful Partition of India in 1947, which divided Punjab in two, the Sikh community found itself a minority in post-independence India, while being a majority in its new Indian state of Punjab. Demands for greater autonomy, or even for an independent Sikh state called Khalistan, began to emerge.
In the 1980s, tensions escalated sharply. The radical Sikh leader Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and his followers entrenched themselves within the Golden Temple complex, transforming it into a fortress. In June 1984, the Indian government, under Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, ordered Operation Blue Star to dislodge the militants. The assault, carried out by the Indian army, caused considerable damage to the shrine and resulted in thousands of casualties, leaving a deep trauma for the Sikh community. Four months later, on October 31, 1984, Indira Gandhi was assassinated by her own Sikh bodyguards in retaliation for the operation.
