Agra — Legacy of Sacred Hands

🎭Your Mission

You are Empress Nur Jahan, Agra, 1632, tasked with tracing the legacy of the city's sacred builders.

Your mission leads you through 1.5 km of historic

Delve into Mughal Agra, where Emperor Shah Jahan erected the Taj Mahal between 1632 and 1653, a universal architectural masterpiece.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest for sacred hands begins in Agra, in front of the Taj Mahal, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983. This 17-hectare complex, with its main dome rising 73 meters, was erected by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between 1632 and 1653. It is a mausoleum dedicated to Mumtaz Mahal, his wife who died in 1631 during the birth of their 14th child. More than 28 types of precious stones, such as lapis lazuli from Afghanistan and jade from China, were imported for its inlays, testifying to the opulence of Mughal architecture.

Continue to Jama Masjid, built in 1643 by the merchant Abdul Latif, a contemporary of Shah Jahan. This mosque, capable of accommodating 10,000 worshippers and featuring 23-meter-high minarets, is located in the immediate vicinity of the Taj Mahal. It offers a glimpse into the religious and community life that revolved around the Mughal court. Nearby, Agra Fort, initially built in 1080 by the Hindu Rajah Badal Singh and rebuilt in red sandstone by Akbar between 1565 and 1574, reveals another facet of Agra's history. With a perimeter of 2.5 km, this fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, could house up to 20,000 soldiers.

Agra Fort, where Shah Jahan was imprisoned by his son Aurangzeb from 1658 to 1666, offers breathtaking views of the Taj Mahal. Inside, the Jahangiri Mahal, completed in 1620, is the fort's largest white palace. Your itinerary then leads you to Chini ka Rauza, a mausoleum erected in 1639 by Abd ul-Carim for his father Afand Diwan, Shah Jahan's chief architect. This 10.5m x 9m edifice, with its 12m bulbous dome, is unique in Agra for its 90% coverage in blue-green Persian tiles (chini-kari), a distinctive style of Uttar Pradesh.

The route also takes you to Kinari Bazaar, a historic 17th-century bazaar that flourished under the Mughals. Named for its narrow alleys (kinari meaning 'narrow bracelet'), this trading hub, located 1 km from the Taj Mahal and a main commercial axis connecting to Agra Fort, was renowned for its precious stones and embroidered fabrics since Shah Jahan's time (1628-1658). It immerses you in the economic and cultural vibrancy of old Agra.

Finally, your exploration concludes at the Tomb of I'timad-ud-Daulah, nicknamed the 'Baby Taj' for its stylistic similarities to the grand mausoleum. Built between 1622 and 1628 by Nur Jahan for her father Mirza Ghiyas Beg, this tomb is considered an architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal, particularly for its pietra dura inlays. Its garden spans 23 hectares, with the mausoleum measuring 21m x 20m. This thematic circuit in Agra offers an interactive and immersive visit to Uttar Pradesh's heritage, revealing the grandeur of Mughal builders and the ingenuity of the Archaeological Survey of India.
