The Occupation of East Timor and the Shock of 1991
Following a brief period of independence from Portugal in 1975, East Timor was invaded and annexed by Indonesia. This led to a brutal and bloody occupation, marked by fierce repression against the Timorese population fighting for self-determination. Hundreds of thousands of civilians were killed, and the international community, despite some condemnations, remained largely passive in the face of the scale of the atrocities.
On November 12, 1991, a funeral procession for Sebastião Gomes, a young man killed by Indonesian forces, turned into a tragedy. Thousands of demonstrators marched towards Santa Cruz cemetery. There, Indonesian soldiers opened fire on the unarmed crowd, killing and disappearing hundreds. Clandestine footage filmed by journalist Max Stahl revealed the horror to the world, forcing the UN and many countries to act, paving the way for East Timor's independence in 2002.
