Quisling's Shadow Over Norway
Vidkun Quisling (1887-1945) was a complex and controversial figure in Norwegian history. A military officer and former Minister of Defence, he founded the far-right Nasjonal Samling (National Union) party in 1933. His nationalist and anti-democratic ideas had limited appeal until the German invasion in April 1940. It was then that Quisling seized the opportunity to align with the Nazis, proclaiming himself head of a new government, an act widely perceived as national treason.
During the German occupation (1940-1945), Quisling became a central figure in the collaborationist regime, appointed 'Minister-President' in 1942 by the occupiers. His government was instrumental in implementing Nazi policies, including the persecution of Norwegian Jews and the suppression of the resistance.
