Corinth — Last Tyrant Psammetichos

🎭Your Mission

You are Lysandros, palace archivist and last confidant of Psammetichos, final tyrant of the Cypselid dynasty, arriving in Corinth in 582 BC

Embody Lysandros, last loyal follower of tyrant Psammetichos, and uncover the intrigues of archaic Corinth in 582 BC.

« Corinth, by its position, commands both seas and unites Hellas to the Peloponnese. »
Thucydides, History of the Peloponnesian War, Book I, 425 BC

The story that haunts this land

Corinth has dominated Mediterranean trade since 747 BC, when Cypselus overthrew the Bacchiads and founded the tyrant dynasty. Your route begins in the Boulè, where Psammetichos's last supporters try to rally the hesitant. These limestone walls heard speeches by Periander, Cypselus's son, who made Corinth Athens's rival around 600 BC. The Heraclid oligarchs, descendants of former kings, have been plotting here for months to restore their power confiscated a century earlier.

The Cypselid palace reveals the opulence of a dynasty controlling the isthmus between Aegean and Ionian seas. Psammetichos accumulates treasures brought from Naucratis, the Greek trading post in Egypt, where his ships load ceramics and perfumes. Wall frescoes depict Periander's victories against Epidaurus and his alliances with Pharaoh Psamtik I. Here your character discovers clay tablets mentioning cargoes of Baltic amber and Nubian ivory enriching the city.

The Asclepius sanctuary testifies to Corinthian cultural influence beyond commerce. Built around 650 BC under Cypselus, it attracts pilgrims and patients from throughout the Peloponnese. Psammetichos funds the Isthmian Games here, rivaling Olympia since 582 BC. Gold and silver ex-votos offered by Phoenician and Etruscan merchants line the temple. Your investigation reveals priests hiding part of the tyrant's treasure in sacred underground chambers.

Lechaeum port materializes the maritime power that made the Cypselids' fortune. Its marble quays welcome Tyrian triremes loaded with purple dye and Etruscan galleys carrying bronze and iron. Psammetichos maintains a war fleet of 200 ships here, financed by merchant transit taxes. Warehouses overflow with Corinthian ceramics exported as far as Crimea and Andalusia. Lydian mercenaries called as reinforcement against rebellious oligarchs transit through this port.

Your mission ends at Apollo's temple, erected around 700 BC and symbol of tyrant legitimacy. Its Doric columns, among Greece's oldest, witnessed ambassadors from Croesus and Nebuchadnezzar II. Psammetichos consults the oracle here before each political decision, continuing Periander's tradition as one of the Seven Sages. By saving dynastic archives, you preserve memory of a Corinth that dominated the Mediterranean for two centuries, before Sparta imposed oligarchy in 582 BC.
