Delhi 1857: The Last Blaze of a Dying Empire
« « The sun of justice is eclipsed, the sky of religion is darkened. The tiger has seized the sheep. » »— Bahadur Shah Zafar, last Mughal emperor, exiled to Burma
By the mid-19th century, the British East India Company controlled much of the Indian subcontinent, fueling growing resentment. The direct trigger for the 1857 mutiny was the introduction of new rifle cartridges greased with animal fat (pork or beef), offending both Hindu and Muslim soldiers. After an uprising in Meerut on May 10, 1857, rebellious sepoys marched to Delhi, arriving on May 11. They quickly took control of the city, declaring the elderly and largely powerless Bahadur Shah Zafar their emperor, hoping to restore Mughal glory.
The capture of Delhi by the rebels was a major blow to British authority and the focal point of the revolt. The city became a symbol of Indian resistance. However, after a long and brutal siege, British forces launched an assault on September 14 and recaptured the city on September 21, 1857. The repression was fierce: massacres of civilians, destruction of entire districts, and the execution of Zafar's sons by Major Hodson. The emperor himself was captured and exiled to Burma, marking the official end of the Mughal dynasty and the establishment of direct British Raj over India.
