Eleusis — The Code of Mysteries

Its six Doric columns, approximately 15 meters wide, marked the access to the Sanctuary of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Partially restored in 1889 by the French Archaeological School of Athens, this major archaeological site of ancient Greece, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1987, invites you to imagine the crowds of pilgrims who crossed this threshold, seeking to unravel the secrets of Demeter and Persephone. Continue your visit to Eleusis to the Ploutonion, a natural cave developed in the 6th century BC, which symbolized the ritual entrance to the Underworld for the Mysteries. This 5-meter deep cavity, with its toxic gas exhalations, was a key element of the rites, mentioned by Pausanias as a place of symbolic death initiation. Closed by a marble wall in the 4th century BC and featuring a limestone threshold 3.5 meters wide, the Ploutonion embodies the passage to the afterlife, at the heart of the Sanctuary of the Eleusinian Mysteries. The Telesterion of Eleusis, the main hall of the Mysteries, then reveals its grandeur. Rebuilt by Hadrian around 130 AD, it could accommodate up to 3000 initiates over a covered area of 52 m x 52 m, supported by 42 internal pillars. The last phase of construction dates from 170 AD, before its destruction in 395 AD by Alaric's Huns.
