The facade of a thousand secrets of Spain's oldest university
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
On the Plateresque facade of the University of Salamanca, a tiny frog perched on a skull waits to be found. Legend says that whoever spots it without help will pass all their exams. But the frog is just the beginning.
Founded in 1218, the University of Salamanca is the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest in Europe. Its Plateresque facade, sculpted in 1534, is a stone puzzle: kings, popes, ancient heroes and hidden symbols mingle in an ornamental profusion that rewards the patient eye. The frog is just its most famous detail.

« "What nature refuses to teach, Salamanca provides." »— — Traditional Spanish proverb
Founded by King Alfonso IX of León in 1218, the University of Salamanca quickly became one of the four great centres of European learning, alongside Bologna, Oxford and Paris. It was here that Francisco de Vitoria laid the foundations of international law, that Antonio de Nebrija wrote the first grammar of a modern European language, and that 16th-century mathematicians calculated the reform of the Gregorian calendar.
The Plateresque facade, commissioned in 1534, is an iconographic programme of dizzying richness. At the centre, the medallion of the Catholic Monarchs. Above, the coat of arms of Charles V. And everywhere, skulls, mythological figures, Venuses and heroes — a humanist manifesto carved in Villamayor stone.
The frog — rana in Spanish — perches on a skull to the right of the portal. It symbolises the sin of lust that awaits the careless student. But for Salamanca's students, it has become a talisman: finding it without help guarantees exam success. For five centuries, thousands of eyes have scrutinised the facade every day.

The gameplay: AR, camera, hidden clues
At each stop, open your phone camera: an augmented reality character appears on the façade and speaks your language. The stops on your route are a surprise. You'll discover them one by one, guided by your phone, starting from the meeting point.
