The price of free knowledge
In the 16th century, the University of Salamanca was one of the most influential in the world. Francisco de Vitoria founded the School of Salamanca there, laying the foundations of international law by asserting that the indigenous peoples of the Americas had natural rights — a revolutionary position at the time of the Conquest.
But this intellectual freedom came at a price. The Inquisition closely monitored lectures. Fray Luis de León, an Augustinian poet and theologian, was arrested in 1572 for preferring the Hebrew text of the Bible to the Latin Vulgate. He spent five years in the dungeons of Valladolid before being acquitted.
The Clerecía — the imposing Jesuit college built facing the University — represents the other face of intellectual power: that of orthodoxy. Jesuits and Dominicans competed for control of knowledge, and students navigated between the two, risking their careers — and sometimes their lives — with every opinion expressed.
