Bizerte — 1961 Battle Secrets

🎭Your Mission

You are a deep-cover intelligence operative, dispatched to Bizerte in July 1961, to piece together the fractured intelligence surrounding the battle.

July 1961:

Bizerte 1961: The Last Act of Decolonization

« The Bizerte base is a piece of our territory and we cannot tolerate it remaining a foreign base. »
Habib Bourguiba, 1961

The Bizerte Crisis: A Milestone of Independence

After Tunisia's independence in 1956, the issue of the Bizerte naval base remained a major point of contention with France. This strategic port, a remnant of the colonial era, was considered by Paris as essential for its defense and interests in the Mediterranean. For Tunis, led by President Habib Bourguiba, the foreign presence on its soil was an unacceptable affront to its sovereignty, and the Bizerte base became the symbol of the unfinished process of decolonization.

Tension reached its peak in July 1961, when Tunisia imposed a blockade and attempted to seize control of the base. The French military response was swift and brutal, leading to the 'Battle of Bizerte' which resulted in thousands of Tunisian casualties. Under international pressure and UN intervention, negotiations resumed, ultimately leading to the November 1962 agreement for a gradual withdrawal. The base was officially evacuated by French forces on October 15, 1963, marking Tunisia's full sovereignty over its entire territory.
