Foundation and Early Development

Kairouan was established around 670 AD by the Arab general Uqba ibn Nafi, under Caliph Mu'awiya. It began as a military outpost in a dense forest, chosen for its strategic inland position to secure an Islamic presence in North Africa, then known as Ifriqiya, and to defend against Berber attacks. The name 'Kairouan' comes from a Persian word meaning 'camp'. The settlement quickly grew from a military base into an administrative center, becoming the capital of Ifriqiya around 705 AD.

The Aghlabid Golden Age

The 9th century marked Kairouan's most prosperous period under the Aghlabid dynasty, which governed Ifriqiya from 800 to 909 AD. Confirmed as hereditary rulers by Caliph Harun ar-Rashid, the Aghlabid emirs developed Kairouan into a center of wealth and Islamic scholarship. They funded the construction of monuments and public works, including the Aghlabid Basins, built between 860 and 862 AD to manage the city's water supply. The Great Mosque of Kairouan, originally founded with the city, was significantly rebuilt and expanded during this era, becoming a leading university for Islamic thought and secular sciences.

Decline and Enduring Heritage

Kairouan's political importance diminished after 909 AD with the rise of the Fatimid dynasty, which moved its capital first to Mahdiyah and later to Sabra al-Mansuriya, near Kairouan. Despite this, the city maintained its spiritual and cultural role, particularly as a center for Maliki law. In 1057, the city was sacked by the Banu Hilal tribes, leading to a period of decline and its transformation into an isolated market town. Kairouan's architectural heritage, including the Great Mosque and the 9th-century Mosque of the Three Doors, led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, acknowledging its role in early Islamic civilization in the Maghreb.

• —Great Mosque of Kairouan — This mosque, also known as the Mosque of Uqba, is a significant Islamic site in North Africa. Non-Muslims can enter its courtyard, which has antique columns and designs, and view the minaret. The prayer hall, with its many marble and porphyry columns, is visible through open doors.
• —Aghlabid Basins — These 9th-century hydraulic structures are outside the medina. Two large circular reservoirs remain from a system of 16, built to supply the city with water. The larger basin is 128 meters in diameter and 4.8 meters deep.
• —Mosque of the Three Doors — Built in 866 AD, this mosque has the oldest decorative façade in Islamic architecture. Its exterior features three horseshoe arches, floral motifs, and Kufic script inscriptions. Its façade is a historical and artistic feature.
• —Bir Barouta (Barouta Well) — This well, inside a carpet shop, is a site of local legend. Visitors can see a blindfolded camel operating a water wheel to draw water. The well is believed by some to connect to the Zamzam well in Mecca.
• —Zaouia Sidi Sahab (Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi) — This mausoleum honors Abu Zamaa el-Belaoui, a companion of the Prophet Muhammad. The complex includes hallways and courtyards decorated with tiles, columns, and carvings.
• —Kairouan Medina — The walled old city is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with narrow alleys and traditional workshops. It offers a view of local life, with souks selling handcrafted goods, ceramics, and Kairouan carpets. The medina's streets were used as a filming location for scenes set in Cairo in Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The best times to visit Kairouan for comfortable outdoor exploration are March to April and October to November. During these months, daytime temperatures are between 20°C and 24°C in spring, and around 19°C in November.

Avoid July and August, as these are the hottest months, with average daily highs reaching 38°C or higher, which makes sightseeing difficult. Winters (December to February) are mild with average temperatures around 17°C, but evenings can be cold. Rainfall is low throughout the year. Ramadan can be a quieter period, with some establishments operating only in the evenings.

Kairouan is approximately 160 kilometers south of Tunis. The city does not have its own airport. The nearest international airports are Tunis-Carthage (TUN) and Monastir (MIR). From these airports, Kairouan is accessible by louage (shared taxi) or private transfer.

Within Kairouan, the Medina is best explored on foot. Its narrow, winding alleys are not accessible to vehicles. For sites outside the Medina, such as the Aghlabid Basins, taxis are available. Parking is generally possible outside the Medina walls. Many shops near the Great Mosque may invite visitors inside; a small donation is a polite gesture if you have received hospitality or enjoyed a view. Local markets, especially the Carpet Souk, offer a view of traditional weaving.
