Motovun — Tito's Partisan Network Exposed

Your investigation begins at Kamenita Vrata, Motovun's Lower Town Gate, built in the 13th century as the main fortified entrance. Continue your path to Trg Andrea Antico, the historic 15th-century central square. Named after composer Andrea Antico (ca. 1480-1538), a native of Motovun, this square was the site of the medieval market and public assemblies under Venetian rule (1421-1797). Surrounded by 16th-century patrician houses with typical Istrian loggias, it holds memories of Venetian merchants. This is where partisans would have exchanged crucial information, disguised as commercial transactions, under the gaze of the ancient stones.

The imposing Crkva Svetog Stjepana, St. Stephen's Church, is your next stop. Built in 1610-1616 in Baroque style on the foundations of a 12th-century Romanesque church, it dominates Motovun. Its 34-meter bell tower, completed in 1789, is a visible emblem of the town. The interior, with its main altar carved in 1680 by Istrian masters and dedicated to Saint Stephen protomartyr, may conceal caches for secret messages. The Palača Polesini, a Renaissance palace built around 1550 for the noble Polesini family, Venetian merchants settled in Motovun, is another key location. Its facade adorned with mullioned windows and the family coat of arms dated 1572 testifies to Istria's wealth. Now a municipal art gallery since 1960, the palace would have served as a meeting point for agents. The Vidikovac, a panoramic platform developed in the 19th century at an altitude of 277 m, offers a 360° view of the Motovun forest and Istrian truffle fields, a strategic observation point during the Austro-Hungarian conflicts (1814-1918).
