Your journey begins at the Virupaksha Temple in Hampi, a colossal edifice built in the 6th century under the Chalukya dynasty and significantly expanded between the 14th and 16th centuries under the Vijayanagara Empire. This temple, dedicated to Shiva Virupaksha, is still active with daily worship. Its main gopuram reaches approximately 50 meters in height, a granite structure adorned with detailed sculptures. Kannada and Telugu inscriptions dating from the 15th century document royal donations from Vijayanagara emperors, offering a first clue to the artifact's location.
Next, you cross the Hampi Bazaar, the former main commercial street of the Vijayanagara era, stretching for approximately 600 meters.
