The Gold Rush and the Founding of Vila Rica

Ouro Preto, meaning "Black Gold," was established at the end of the 17th century. It became the center of Brazil's gold rush during the 18th century. Initially named Vila Rica, or "Rich Village," it quickly became one of Brazil's wealthiest cities. The name "Black Gold" refers to gold found in the area, which had a layer of iron oxide, giving it a dark appearance. This discovery in the Serra do Espinhaço mountains by fortune-seekers led to a large influx of prospectors, including over 400,000 Portuguese and 500,000 enslaved Africans, brought to the region to work in the mines. By the early 1700s, Vila Rica had developed into a settlement.

A Center of Administration and Art

Ouro Preto served as the capital of Minas Gerais Province from 1720 to 1897. At its peak, the city's population reached close to 110,000 residents, a number that exceeded New York City's population at the time. The wealth from gold mining supported the development of Baroque architecture and art. While much of the extracted gold was sent to Portugal, a portion was used to decorate Ouro Preto's churches. The city became a center for artists, notably Antônio Francisco Lisboa, known as Aleijadinho, whose sculptures and architectural designs define the Brazilian Baroque style. In 1789, Ouro Preto became the symbolic center of the Inconfidência Mineira, a failed independence movement against Portuguese colonial rule. This movement aimed to establish an independent republic. The city's influence decreased with the exhaustion of the gold mines in the 19th century, leading to its decline and the relocation of the provincial government to Belo Horizonte in 1897. This economic stagnation preserved its colonial architecture and urban layout, leading to its designation as Brazil's first UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980.

• —Former Town Hall and Prison (Inconfidência Museum) — This building on Tiradentes Square, constructed between 1785 and 1855, housed the municipal government and a prison. Since 1944, it has been the Inconfidência Museum, dedicated to the Inconfidência Mineira and the society and culture of Minas Gerais during the 18th-century gold and diamond cycle.
• —Our Lady of Pilar Mother Church — This church has an interior with gold ornamentation. It is a church in Ouro Preto and an example of Brazilian colonial art.
• —Contos Fountain — These fountains on street corners are part of Ouro Preto's colonial streetscape.
• —House of the Counts (Casa dos Contos) — This historical building shows the economic history of the gold rush era and hosts cultural events.
• —Saint Francis of Assisi Church — Designed by Aleijadinho, this Rococo Catholic church, with construction beginning in 1766, is an example of Brazilian Baroque. Its facade has a soapstone frontispiece depicting Saint Francis receiving the stigmata, and the interior has golden woodwork and a ceiling painting by Manuel da Costa Ataíde.
• —Morro da Queimada Viewpoint — This viewpoint offers views of Ouro Preto's buildings and the surrounding hilly landscape.
• —Oratory Museum — This museum displays a collection of sacred art, specifically oratories, showing private devotional practices of the colonial era.
• —Former Governor's Palace (School of Mines) — This administrative building, also known as the School of Mines, is an example of the city's architectural works and contributed to Brazil's mineral discoveries.

Ouro Preto has a subtropical highland climate with moderate temperatures year-round. There are two seasons: a wet summer (October to March) and a dry winter (April to September). The dry season, from April to September, offers clear skies and cooler nights, with July being the coldest and driest month. July is also peak domestic tourism due to the Winter Festival, resulting in more crowds. The wet season, from October to March, brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms, making stone streets slippery and increasing landslide risk. December and January are the wettest months. Carnival, in February, is a crowded time to visit; accommodation should be booked months in advance.

Ouro Preto is about 100 km south of Belo Horizonte. The nearest airport is Belo Horizonte's Confins International (CNF), about 1.5 hours away by road. Regular buses connect Ouro Preto to Belo Horizonte (2 hours), Rio de Janeiro (7-8.5 hours), and São Paulo (8-11 hours). The Ouro Preto bus station is a short R$10 taxi ride from the historic center.

Within the city center, walking is the primary way to get around due to the city's size and steep, stone streets. Comfortable shoes are recommended. Uber is available as an alternative to taxis. Parking is limited in the historic center. Many attractions, including the Inconfidência Museum, are closed on Mondays.
