The Gold and Blood of the Inconfidentes
In the 18th century, Ouro Preto, then Vila Rica, was the beating heart of colonial Brazil, drawing gold from the mines to Portugal. This colossal wealth led to sumptuous baroque architecture, but also fierce exploitation. The Portuguese Crown imposed the "quinto", a one-fifth tax on all extracted gold, and threatened the "derrama", a forced collection to meet unfulfilled quotas, plunging the population into misery and indignation.
It was in this context of latent revolt that the Inconfidência Mineira matured in 1789. Intellectuals, soldiers, poets, and ecclesiastics, inspired by Enlightenment ideals and American independence, conspired to free the captaincy of Minas Gerais from Portuguese rule. Tiradentes, an alferes (ensign) and dentist, was one of the most ardent figures of this movement. Betrayed, he was arrested, tried, and executed in a public square in Rio de Janeiro in 1792, becoming an immortal symbol of the struggle for Brazilian independence.
