Gold and the Founding of a Pilgrimage Site

Congonhas's history began in the early 18th century, around 1700, with the Brazilian gold rush. Portuguese prospectors arrived in Minas Gerais, establishing mining camps along streams and roads. The present municipality developed from three colonial settlements: Congonhas do Campo, Soledade (now Lobo Leite), and Redondo (now Alto Maranhão), all along routes through the gold-rich region. Congonhas do Campo developed on the banks of the Ribeirão das Congonhas, later known as the Maranhão River, where gold was extracted, primarily with enslaved labor.

The town became a regional pilgrimage center after construction of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos began in 1757. This baroque church, with its Rococo interior, was commissioned by Feliciano Mendes, a Portuguese hermit and miner who vowed to build a temple after recovering from a serious illness. The basilica was completed in 1772, though the entire complex, including paintings, was finished in the late 19th century. The Sanctuary was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985.

Aleijadinho's Legacy and Industrial Shift

The late 18th century saw the addition of the Steps of the Passion of Christ, featuring six chapels with 64 polychrome cedar wood carvings by Antônio Francisco Lisboa, known as Aleijadinho. Born in Ouro Preto around 1738, Aleijadinho was the son of a Portuguese architect and an enslaved African woman. Despite a debilitating illness that caused physical deformities, he continued to create art, often with tools tied to his hands. Between 1796 and 1805, he sculpted the twelve monumental soapstone prophets that line the Sanctuary's forecourt. These works are expressions of Brazilian religious art and a cornerstone of the Brazilian Baroque style.

As gold deposits diminished in the late 18th century, Congonhas's economy changed. The discovery of substantial iron ore reserves in the early 19th century led to the establishment of Brazil's first steel center in the city, marking a new industrial era. Congonhas do Campo remained a district of Ouro Preto until 1923, then transferred to Queluz (now Conselheiro Lafaiete), becoming a municipality on December 17, 1938.

It preserves artifacts related to the Sanctuary's history and displays works attributed to Aleijadinho and his workshop, offering insights into the city's heritage.
• —Church of Nossa Senhora da Conceição — This parish church, established in the first half of the 18th century, is a historical religious site in Congonhas.
• —Church of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos — Built by the Black community of colonial Congonhas, this chapel was in use by 1729 and shows the presence and contributions of enslaved and free Black members in the city's history.

Congonhas is a year-round destination. The dry season, from May to September, offers cooler and less humid weather, with average daily highs around 22-26°C (72-79°F) and lows around 13-17°C (56-63°F). This period has fewer crowds.

The warmest months are December to March, Brazil's summer. This period can be hot, humid, and rainy. January is the wettest month, with an average of 21.6 cm (8.5 inches) of precipitation. Avoid these summer months if you prefer to avoid heat and rain.

Congonhas is in central Minas Gerais, about 75 km south of Belo Horizonte. The closest major airport is Belo Horizonte (BH). From there, Congonhas is reachable by car or bus. The drive takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours via BR-040.

In Congonhas, the main attractions, especially the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos and its chapels, are concentrated and walkable. The city is small, with streets around its churches and pilgrimage routes.

For parking, if driving, look for local parking near the Sanctuary. Renting a car is advisable if you plan to explore the wider Minas Gerais region. There are no specific market days or local transport tariffs to note.
