From Colonial Port to Imperial Capital

Rio de Janeiro's history begins with its natural harbor, Guanabara Bay. The city was founded on March 1, 1565, by Estácio de Sá, a Portuguese knight, who named it São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro. The initial settlement was established to protect the Portuguese colony from French invaders who had previously attempted to establish France Antarctique in the area. For its first two centuries, Rio remained a minor port, secondary to Salvador, the first capital of colonial Brazil.

The 18th century marked a turning point for Rio. The discovery of gold and diamonds in Minas Gerais transformed the city into an export hub for these resources. This economic growth led to an increase in population and importance. In 1763, Rio de Janeiro replaced Salvador as the capital of the Portuguese colony.

The Arrival of the Royal Family and the Birth of an Empire

A significant shift occurred in 1808 when the Portuguese royal family, fleeing Napoleon's invasion of Portugal, relocated their entire court to Rio de Janeiro. This event transformed the colonial city into the capital of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil, and the Algarves. During this period, urban development took place, including the establishment of various institutions and the expansion of infrastructure. The Paço Imperial, built in 1743 as the governor's residence, became the royal palace for King John VI.

After Brazil declared its independence in 1822, the Paço Imperial continued to serve as the administrative center for Emperors Pedro I and Pedro II, even though they resided elsewhere. The city remained the capital of the Empire of Brazil until 1889, when the republic was proclaimed. It then served as the capital of the Republic of Brazil until 1960, when the capital moved to Brasília. Traces of this past are visible in the city's architecture, particularly around Praça XV de Novembro, where colonial buildings stand as a testament to Rio's imperial legacy.

• —Paço Imperial — This 18th-century building served as the residence for colonial governors, then as a royal palace for King John VI of Portugal, and later as a workplace for Brazil's emperors, Pedro I and Pedro II. Today, it operates as a cultural center, hosting exhibitions.
• —Praça XV de Novembro — A historic square that was once the city's main port and the site of historical events, including the proclamation of the Brazilian Republic on November 15, 1889. It is flanked by the Paço Imperial and features the Chafariz do Mestre Valentim, a fountain inaugurated in 1789.
• —Arco do Teles — This mid-18th-century arch connects Praça XV to Rua do Ouvidor. It was once part of a complex of houses owned by the Telles de Menezes family.
• —Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Candelária — A baroque-style church whose construction began in 1775 and was inaugurated in 1898. Its facade faces Guanabara Bay, and its interior features paintings and bronze doors.
• —Largo dos Guimarães — A square in the Santa Teresa neighborhood, known as a central point for the Santa Teresa tram. It is a place to observe local life and the atmosphere of the neighborhood.
• —Parque das Ruínas — The ruins of a mansion belonging to the patroness of the arts, Laurinda Santos Lobo, transformed into a public park and cultural center. It offers views of the city from its hilltop location in Santa Teresa.

The best times to visit Rio de Janeiro are during the shoulder seasons: March to May or September to October. During these months, temperatures range from 20°C to 28°C, and humidity is lower than in summer. The city is active but less crowded than during peak season, and hotel prices are generally more affordable.

Summer, from December to February, is hot and humid, with daily highs around 31°C and frequent, intense rain showers. This is also peak tourist season, especially during Carnival (late February or early March), meaning higher prices and larger crowds.

Winter, from June to August, is mild and dry, with average daytime temperatures between 16°C and 25°C. While nights can be cooler, this season is suitable for outdoor activities and sightseeing due to fewer crowds and less rain.

Rio de Janeiro is served by Galeão International Airport (GIG), located about 20 kilometers from the city center. To get around the city, Rio offers several public transport options. The MetroRio subway system is clean, safe, and efficient, connecting the South Zone with Centro and other areas. Buses are extensive and cheap, but can be crowded during rush hour (7 AM-9 AM and 4 PM-7 PM) and are not recommended after dark, especially in Centro. Taxis are plentiful and can be hailed on the street; yellow taxis with a blue stripe are licensed. Ride-hailing services like Uber are also available.

For those driving, street parking is difficult to find and not considered safe; it's advisable to use secure car parks. Many areas, particularly in the historic center and Santa Teresa, are best explored on foot. For shopping, explore the city's markets. The Feira Hippie in Praça General Osório (Ipanema) on Sundays offers crafts and local food. The Feira Rio Antigo on Rua Lavradio (Lapa) on the first Saturday of each month is known for antiques and live music. For fresh produce, visit the Feira de São Cristóvão.
