From Military Outpost to Cigar Capital

Tampa's origins trace to January 1824, when the U.S. Army established Fort Brooke at the mouth of the Hillsborough River. This secured the newly acquired Florida territory from Spain. This military presence attracted a small civilian population, leading to the formal incorporation of the "Village of Tampa" in 1849. Initially, Tampa remained an isolated frontier outpost, with growth hindered by poor transportation and conflicts with the Seminole tribe.

The city's situation changed in the mid-1880s. The arrival of Henry B. Plant's railroad in 1884 connected Tampa to wider markets and spurred development. Simultaneously, the discovery of phosphate in the nearby Bone Valley region in 1883 led to a boom in mining and shipping, transforming Tampa into a port for this mineral. In 1885, Vicente Martinez-Ybor, a cigar manufacturer, relocated his operations from Key West to an area east of Tampa, founding Ybor City. By 1900, Ybor City produced nearly half a billion hand-rolled cigars annually and attracted a population of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants.

The Shaping of Modern Tampa

By the early 20th century, Tampa had evolved into a prosperous community. The city served as the primary outfitting and embarkation port for U.S. troops heading to Cuba during the Spanish-American War in 1898. The 1920s saw further expansion with the creation of Davis Islands, a man-made island developed for real estate, featuring homes that still stand today. While the cigar industry declined by the 1950s, Ybor City underwent revitalization in the late 1990s, transforming into a district of shops, restaurants, and entertainment. Today, Tampa continues to grow, with the Hillsborough River and Tampa Bay remaining central to its commercial success and identity.

• —Ybor City Historic District — Walk through the stone streets and see the red-brick cigar factories and mutual aid society buildings that show Tampa's immigrant past. This National Historic Landmark District once produced many cigars and today hosts shops, restaurants, and clubs.
• —Tampa Riverwalk — This 2.6-mile pedestrian trail runs along the Hillsborough River, connecting downtown Tampa's attractions, parks, and public spaces. The Tampa Bay History Center, the Tampa Museum of Art, and the Glazer Children's Museum are along its path.
• —Henry B. Plant Museum — Housed in the former Tampa Bay Hotel, a Moorish-style building constructed in 1891 by Henry B. Plant, this museum shows the Gilded Age with original furnishings and exhibits on the hotel's history.
• —Columbia Restaurant (Ybor City) — Florida's oldest continuously operated restaurant, founded in 1905, occupies an entire city block in Ybor City. It serves Spanish and Cuban cuisine in its dining rooms, including the Don Quixote room, which was Tampa's first air-conditioned dining room.
• —Tampa Union Station — This Italian Renaissance Revival style train station, built in 1912, is a historic landmark. It remains an operational Amtrak station and is an example of early 20th-century architecture.
• —Bayshore Boulevard — Walk or bike along this waterfront road, known for its continuous sidewalk, homes, and views of Hillsborough Bay. It is home to the Spanish-American War Veterans Monument.

The best time to visit Tampa is from late October through April. During these months, the weather is mild and pleasant, with lower humidity and sunshine, suitable for outdoor activities. March and April offer warm, dry days and comfortable evenings, with many festivals taking place. November is also a good option, with good weather and fewer crowds before the winter rush. December through February can be more crowded due to tourists escaping colder climates.

Avoid visiting in the summer, from June to August. Temperatures are highest, often reaching into the 90s Fahrenheit, and humidity is very high. This period also sees frequent rain showers and is the peak of hurricane season, which runs from June 1 to November 30.

Tampa International Airport (TPA) is the main gateway, located about 6 miles west of downtown. For train travel, Tampa Union Station, a historic landmark built in 1912, is on the eastern edge of downtown and offers daily Amtrak service.

Within downtown and Ybor City, many areas are walkable. The TECO Line Streetcar System connects downtown, the Channel District, and Ybor City, offering a way to get around these historic areas. For wider exploration, ride-sharing services and taxis are available. Parking in downtown Tampa and Ybor City is available in garages and surface lots, though it can be busy during peak times.

Tampa hosts several local markets. The Ybor City Saturday Market runs every Saturday, offering locally produced goods. The Water Street Sunday Market, with over 90 vendors, takes place on the third Sunday of each month, year-round, in downtown Tampa. Hyde Park Village also hosts a Fresh Market on the first Sunday of each month.
