Revolution in the Smoke
In 1885, Vicente Martínez-Ybor founded in Tampa the world's largest concentration of cigar factories. Fleeing troubles in Key West and attracted by railway facilities, thousands of Cuban, Spanish and Italian workers settled in what quickly became 'the Havana of Florida.' The Martínez-Ybor, Sanchez y Haya and Cuesta-Rey factories employed up to 12,000 tabaqueros, creating a unique cosmopolitan community in the United States.
From 1887, José Martí transformed Ybor City into the headquarters of the Cuban revolution. The Cuban Revolutionary Party collected considerable funds there: each tabaquero contributed part of his salary to buy arms and ammunition. The factory readers, paid by the workers themselves, became secret agents of independence. They slipped into their daily readings of Victor Hugo or Alexandre Dumas coded news from the insurrectionist movement, instructions for clandestine collections, and messages from Martí in New York. When the 1895 war broke out, Tampa had already sent more than 50 armed expeditions to Cuba.
