From Pirate Haven to Wrecking Capital

Key West's origins in the early 19th century were shaped by its location. In 1822, Alabama businessman John Simonton purchased the island for $2,000. In 1823, Commodore David Porter established a U.S. Navy anti-piracy base at Mallory Square to clear the surrounding waters of buccaneers. Once piracy was suppressed, the island became the center of a "wrecking" industry. Coral reefs around Key West caused frequent shipwrecks, and licensed salvage captains recovered cargo and auctioned it on the wharves of Mallory Square. This trade made Key West the wealthiest city per capita in the United States by 1850.

Architectural Echoes of Prosperity and Adaptation

The island's prosperity in the 19th century is visible in its architecture. The Key West Custom House, a four-story red brick building, opened in 1891. It reflects the city's economy and the need for federal services like customs, a post office, and district courts. Its Richardsonian Romanesque design, with arched windows and a clock tower, was typical for federal buildings of that era and built to withstand the tropical climate. Many of Key West's residential buildings, particularly the "Conch houses," were built by Bahamian immigrants in the 1800s. These homes were designed for the local climate, featuring tall windows for ventilation, broad porches for shade, and pastel exteriors to reflect the sun. Many early homes incorporated salvaged shipwreck wood, a testament to the resourcefulness of the early residents.

The best time to visit Key West is during the spring months, from March to May. Temperatures are warm and mild, typically ranging from 70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit (21-29°C), with less humidity than summer. Crowds decrease after the winter high season, and accommodation prices become more reasonable. April is recommended for its weather, fewer crowds, and the annual Conch Republic Independence Celebration. The winter months (December to February) also offer good weather with low humidity and temperatures in the mid-60s to mid-70s (18-24°C), but this is peak tourist season, resulting in higher prices and larger crowds. Avoid late summer and early fall (September and October) if possible, as this is the peak of hurricane season.

Key West International Airport (EYW) is the closest airport, a few miles from Old Town. Many visitors drive the Overseas Highway, a route connecting the Florida Keys. Getting around Key West is best done on foot, by bicycle, or using local trolleys and taxis, especially in the compact Old Town area. Parking is difficult and expensive, particularly in the historic district. Public parking lots are available, but spaces fill quickly. Consider leaving your car at your accommodation and exploring on two wheels or by foot. Key West is a walkable city, and many attractions are close to each other. The island does not have a comprehensive public bus system for general tourist use, but shuttle services often connect hotels to popular areas. Many shops and restaurants on Duval Street stay open late, especially on weekends.
