The pioneering merchant and his Indian epic
Born in the early 15th century in Tver, Afanasy Nikitin was a simple merchant who dreamed of distant horizons. In 1468, he embarked on a commercial journey that would take him far beyond usual routes, crossing the Caspian Sea, Persia, and the Arabian Sea to reach India, thus becoming the first known European to visit India by this route even before Vasco da Gama. His journey, motivated by trade and curiosity, was fraught with difficulties, including shipwrecks, pirate attacks, and cultural challenges.
Nikitin's account, 'A Journey Beyond the Three Seas', is an invaluable testimony to 15th-century India. In it, he describes with rare precision the customs, religions, economy, and politics of the subcontinent, offering Russians a unique window into a distant world. Tragically, he died shortly before returning to Tver, but his manuscript was collected and integrated into the Sofia Chronicle, ensuring his legacy and making him an iconic figure of Russian exploration.
