In December 1237, the Principality of Riazan became the first victim of the Mongol invasion of Rus'. Under the command of Batu Khan, grandson of Genghis Khan, a vast army besieged the city. After a heroic six-day siege, during which the defenders, led by Grand Prince Yuri Igorevich, refused to surrender, Riazan was stormed, burned, and completely destroyed. The population was massacred, the city literally razed, marking a tragic turning point in the history of Rus'.
The legend of Evpaty Kolovrat emerges from this tragedy. Absent from Riazan during the attack, he returned to find his city in ruins. Gathering a small troop of 1700 men, he pursued the Golden Horde, inflicting significant losses on the Mongols, defying their apparent invincibility. His bravery and determination, even in the face of certain annihilation, made him a national hero, a symbol of the indomitable spirit of the Russian people against adversity.
