From Medieval Stronghold to Moravian Capital

Brno's origins trace back to settlements in the 2nd century. A castle of the Přemyslid dynasty stood here from the 11th century. The city was officially recognized in 1243 by King Wenceslaus I of Bohemia. During the 14th century, Brno became a center for the Moravian regional assemblies, which handled political, legal, and financial decisions.

The city's strategic importance was tested repeatedly. During the Hussite Wars, Brno withstood two sieges in 1428 and 1430. A moment arrived during the Thirty Years' War. In 1641, Brno was made the capital of Moravia. The city defended itself against two Swedish sieges, notably a 112-day siege in 1645. This defense, against a Swedish army of nearly 30,000 soldiers with a Brno garrison of about 1,500, allowed the Austrian Empire to regroup and repel the Swedes. In recognition, Emperor Ferdinand III granted Brno renewed city privileges and an improved city emblem.

The Rise of "Moravian Manchester"

In the years following the Thirty Years' War, Brno was transformed into a Baroque fortress. The 18th century marked the beginning of industrial and trade development, accelerating into the 19th century. Brno became an industrial hub, earning it the nickname "Moravian Manchester" due to its textile and machine industry. The first train arrived in Brno in 1839, establishing its role as an economic center. This period of growth saw the expansion of suburbs and the dismantling of city fortifications.

The 20th century brought further development, including the establishment of Masaryk University in 1919 and the opening of the Brno Fairgrounds in 1928. Brno was occupied by Nazi Germany during World War II, and its Jewish community was largely deported. After the war, Brno continued to evolve as an industrial, scientific, and cultural center, and remains the political and cultural hub of the South Moravian Region.

• —Špilberk Castle — A royal castle from the 13th century, it became a Baroque fortress and a prison. It now houses the Brno City Museum and offers views of the city.
• —Old Town Hall (Stará radnice) — This Gothic-Renaissance building has a portal with a crooked pinnacle. Its tower offers views of the historic center. Inside, visitors can see the Brno Dragon and the Brno Wheel.
• —Cabbage Market (Zelný trh) — A market square where local produce, flowers, and crafts are sold. The Parnas Fountain, a Baroque creation by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, stands in the center.
• —Ossuary at the Church of St. James (Kostnice u sv. Jakuba) — This underground ossuary, rediscovered in 2001, is the second-largest in Europe. It holds the remains of over 50,000 people, many of whom died during plague and cholera epidemics or the Thirty Years' War.
• —Capuchin Crypt — Beneath the Capuchin Church of the Discovery of the Holy Cross, this crypt contains the naturally mummified remains of Capuchin friars and other Brno citizens from the 17th and 18th centuries.
• —Villa Tugendhat — A modernist building designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, completed in 1928. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and an example of functionalist architecture.

For warm-weather activities, visit Brno from mid-June to early September. July is the hottest month, with average highs of 24°C. This period has long, sunny days. May and September offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds, with average highs around 19-21°C. May can be wet.

Autumn brings cooler temperatures and fall colors. Winter, from December to February, is cold with temperatures around 0°C or below, and can be snowy. Christmas markets are open then. The city is quietest in January and February. Avoid visiting in January and February if you prefer warmer weather and more outdoor activities, as many outdoor attractions may be limited.

Brno–Tuřany Airport (BRQ) is 10-13 km from the city center. Reach the main train station (Hlavní nádraží) by public bus E76 during the day or N89 at night. The journey takes 20-25 minutes. Tickets can be bought at the airport or on the bus with a contactless card.

Brno's city center is compact and walkable. For longer distances, public transport includes trams, buses, and trolleybuses, with night buses. Buy tickets from yellow vending machines at stops, in newsagents, or by tapping a contactless bank card on validators inside the vehicle. A 15-minute ticket costs 20 CZK, and a 60-minute ticket is 25 CZK. Paid car parks are available in the city center, and there is a park-and-ride facility on the outskirts.
