Born in 1822 in Silesia (now in the Czech Republic), Johann Gregor Mendel entered the Augustinian Monastery of St. Thomas in Brno in 1843. It was in the garden of this monastery that, between 1856 and 1863, he conducted his famous experiments on pea plants. Observing thousands of plants, he identified hereditary 'factors' (what we now call genes) and formulated the laws of segregation and independent assortment, demonstrating that traits are transmitted predictably.
Mendel presented his results in 1865 to the Natural Science Society of Brno and published his work 'Experiments on Plant Hybridization' in 1866. Unfortunately, the scientific community of the time failed to grasp the significance of his discoveries. His work was largely ignored, and he died in 1884 without ever seeing his genius recognized. It was only in 1900, sixteen years after his death, that three European botanists independently rediscovered his laws, marking the official birth of genetics.
