From Roman Stronghold to Moravian Capital

Olomouc's origins trace back to at least the 7th century, with archaeological findings suggesting earlier settlements from Roman times. A 1459 document by King George of Poděbrady records a legend that the city was founded by Julius Caesar, who named it 'Julius Hill' (Mons Iulii). By the 9th century, it was a stronghold, and in the early 11th century, it became the base for the Olomouc princely castle. The Moravian bishopric was established here in 1063, solidifying its importance. The medieval royal city was officially founded before the mid-13th century, combining artisan and market settlements along old trade routes.

Olomouc developed during the 14th and 15th centuries, becoming one of the main cities of the Moravian Margraviate and, from 1187 to 1641, served as the capital of Moravia. Its position was often contested by Brno. The city remained Catholic during the Hussite Wars and never fell to the Hussites. This period of development was interrupted by the Thirty Years' War. Olomouc was occupied and plundered by the Swedish army from 1642 to 1650, leaving the city in ruins and causing it to lose its status to Brno.

Baroque Reconstruction and Imperial Connections

Following the devastation of the Thirty Years' War, Olomouc underwent a Baroque reconstruction in the late 17th and 18th centuries. This era saw the creation of many of its landmarks, including the Holy Trinity Column, built between 1716 and 1754 as an expression of gratitude for the end of a plague that struck Moravia between 1713 and 1715. The city was also fortified by Empress Maria Theresa during her wars with Frederick the Great. In 1758, the Olomouc fortress withstood a seven-week siege by Prussian troops, proving its strategic importance. The Archbishop's Palace also played a role in imperial history when Emperor Ferdinand V abdicated in its Throne Room on December 2, 1848, in favor of Francis Joseph I.

• —Holy Trinity Column — This UNESCO World Heritage site, completed in 1754, is a Baroque plague column, 35 meters tall. It has 18 stone sculptures of saints, 12 reliefs of apostles, and gilded copper statues of the Holy Trinity and the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.
• —Archbishop's Palace — The residence of Olomouc bishops since its foundation, and archbishops since 1777. The current Baroque palace, rebuilt between 1664 and 1669 after a fire, features a Neo-Baroque facade and interiors with Rococo, Empire, and Neo-Baroque decorations.
• —Town Hall and Astronomical Clock — Located in Horní náměstí (Upper Square), the Town Hall dates back to the late 14th century. Its northern wing has a Neo-Gothic facade from the early 20th century. The building also features a Renaissance portal, loggia, and late Gothic oriel windows. The astronomical clock, originally from the 15th century, was restored after being damaged in World War II.
• —Caesar Fountain — The largest of Olomouc's Baroque fountains, built in 1720, it honors Julius Caesar, the city's legendary founder. It depicts Caesar on horseback, symbolizing his supposed connection to the city's origins.
• —St. Wenceslas Cathedral — Founded between 1104 and 1107, this Neo-Gothic cathedral features a twin-tower facade. Its southern tower, at 100.65 meters, is the tallest church tower in Moravia. Inside, there are 13th-century Gothic pillars and a large early Baroque presbytery.
• —St. Michael's Church — This Baroque church, consecrated in 1707, is recognizable by its three octagonal copper domes, which symbolize the Holy Trinity. The interior has stucco work by Baldassarre Fontana and an organ from 1706.
• —Dolní náměstí (Lower Square) and Marian Column — A square with the Neptune Fountain and old houses. The Marian Column, also known as the Plague Column of the Virgin Mary, was erected as a votive column.
• —Theresian Gate (Terezská brána) — Built in 1752, this Baroque gate was named in honor of Empress Maria Theresa during her visit in 1754. It is the only surviving city gate from the Olomouc fortress and resembles a Roman triumphal arch, with a central passage and narrower pedestrian passages.

The best time to visit Olomouc is from May to September, when the weather is most suitable for exploring the city on foot. Daytime temperatures during these months range from 20°C in May to 26°C in July. June is pleasant, though it is also the wettest month. September offers conditions with fewer crowds and the International Organ Festival. The Christmas market, from late November to December 24, provides a reason to visit during winter, with the Holy Trinity Column lit. Avoid January and February if you dislike cold, as temperatures can drop to 1°C during the day and -5°C at night.

Olomouc is accessible by train, with direct connections from Prague taking about 2.5 to 3 hours, and from Brno approximately 1.5 hours. The main train station, Olomouc hlavní nádraží, is about a 25-minute walk from the old town, or a tram ride away. For those flying, the nearest commercial airports are Brno and Ostrava, though Prague, Vienna, and Krakow offer more flights.

The city center is walkable and largely flat. Public transport consists of a network of trams and buses. Tickets can be purchased from vending machines at stops, newsagents, or directly from the driver (with a small surcharge). A single ticket for 40 minutes on weekdays (60 minutes on weekends) costs around 25 CZK. Credit cards are widely accepted. Shops generally open from 9:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and until 12:00 on Saturdays.
