In 52 BC, Vercassivellaunos commands the Arverni cavalry alongside Vercingetorix during the Gallic revolt against Caesar. An experienced chief of the Arverni territory, which extended over present-day Auvergne, he intimately knew the natural resources of his region, particularly the sacred thermal springs of Vichy, venerated for centuries by the druids.
After the defeat at Gergovia and the retreat to Alesia, Vercassivellaunos allegedly entrusted to Vichy's thermal waters an ultimate resistance plan.
