The Tragedy of the Seventh Crusade
In 1244, the loss of Jerusalem prompted Louis IX to vow to go on a crusade. After four years of preparations, he raised a vast army and landed in Damietta on June 6, 1249. The city, poorly defended, fell with little resistance. This easy victory, however, was misleading. The Crusaders bogged down in Damietta for several months, weakened by disease, desertions, and internal divisions. The king, pious but inexperienced in the Egyptian terrain, underestimated the resilience of the Mamluks and the logistical complexity of the campaign.
The advance towards Cairo, via Mansoura, proved disastrous. After fierce fighting and the loss of his brother Robert of Artois, Louis IX was taken prisoner at the Battle of Fariskur in April 1250. He was released in exchange for a colossal ransom and the return of Damietta. This bitter failure marked a turning point in the history of the Crusades, demonstrating the end of the era of great expeditions to the Holy Land and the rise of Mamluk power in Egypt.
