Puntarenas, established on a narrow strip of sand, became Costa Rica's main Pacific port from the early 19th century. Inaugurated in sections from 1897 and finally completed to San José in 1910, the Ferrocarril al Pacífico symbolized the perseverance of a nation determined to export its wealth, despite the natural and technical obstacles that earned it the nickname 'the impossible railway.'
