From Indigenous Settlement to Colonial Port

Puntarenas, whose name translates to "sand point," sits on a narrow peninsula extending into the Gulf of Nicoya. This geographical feature has shaped its development for centuries. Before European arrival, indigenous groups like the Chorotega fished and traded along these Pacific waters. Spanish colonizers recognized the natural advantage of the sheltered harbor. The first European settlement in the area was established in 1522 by Gil González Dávila.

For much of the colonial era, Puntarenas remained a small fishing and trading community. Its significance grew in the mid-18th century as the demand for coffee in Europe increased. Costa Rica, lacking an easy route to the Caribbean, used Puntarenas as its primary port for exporting coffee. Coffee was transported from the highlands by mule convoys. In 1814, the Spanish Crown officially designated Puntarenas as a major port for the province's commerce. By 1845, it was declared a duty-free port, which further increased its economic activity.

The Railroad Era and Modern Challenges

The transformation of Puntarenas into a major commercial hub began in the 1880s with the construction of a railroad connecting it to Esparza, one of Costa Rica's earliest inland settlements. By 1910, this economic artery extended to the Central Valley and San José, allowing coffee and other goods to be transported more efficiently for export. This era brought prosperity and growth, establishing Puntarenas as Costa Rica's leading Pacific port.

However, the city's importance as a major shipping port began to decline in the 1980s. Modern, larger shipping vessels could no longer be accommodated by the older facilities, and a new port was constructed in nearby Caldera. The railroad itself sustained severe damage in the 1991 earthquake, and operations were suspended in 1995. Today, while commercial shipping has largely moved to Caldera, Puntarenas remains a fishing port and a stop for cruise ships. It serves as a gateway to the Nicoya Peninsula and a local vacation spot.

• —Paseo de los Turistas — This three-kilometer boardwalk runs along the main beach, with views of the Gulf of Nicoya. It is an area with shops, restaurants, and kiosks selling local crafts and snacks.
• —Puntarenas Pier (Main Jetty) — A central point for local activity, where fishing boats and ferries depart for the Nicoya Peninsula. At night, it is a place for locals to fish.

Its main facade faces east. Inside, the design is Neoclassical with white walls, golden moldings, Doric columns, and a wooden vaulted roof.
• —Old Customs House (Antigua Aduana) — Constructed in 1938 with Art Deco and Art Nouveau influences, this building served as the South Customs Office. Today, it functions as the House of Culture (Casa de la Cultura), hosting monthly art exhibitions and housing a public library.
• —Old Pacific Railway Station (Antigua Estación del Ferrocarril al Pacífico) — This historic station is a reminder of the railroad era that shaped Puntarenas in the early 20th century. The railway is no longer operational, but the building stands as evidence of the city's past as a coffee export hub.
• —Mora y Cañas Central Park (Parque Central Mora y Cañas) — This central park provides a green space in the city and contains the Tomás Guardia Monument, honoring a former president of Costa Rica. It is a place for locals to gather.
• —Puntarenas Lighthouse (Faro de Puntarenas) — Located at the end of the Paseo de los Turistas, this lighthouse marks the tip of the peninsula and offers views of the surrounding waters.

Puntarenas has a tropical climate with consistent warmth year-round, but distinct dry and wet seasons. The dry season, from December to April, is the most popular time to visit, offering warm, sunny weather with average daytime temperatures reaching up to 32°C (90°F) in March. Skies are clearest in January. This period sees peak tourist traffic, especially during Holy Week (Semana Santa) when the town becomes busy with local families.

The wet season, or "green season," runs from May to November. Rain is common, but it typically falls in the afternoons or at night, leaving mornings often sunny. September and October are the rainiest months. This season offers lush landscapes, fewer crowds, and lower prices. Temperatures remain warm, averaging around 29°C (84°F) in October, the coolest month.

Puntarenas is approximately 120 km (74 miles) from San José, a journey that typically takes 1.5 to 2 hours by car via Route 27. Public buses offer an inexpensive option from San José to Puntarenas, departing from a main bus station in the capital. Taxis are available in Puntarenas and can be hailed on the street or booked. Ride-sharing services like Uber are also an option.

Within Puntarenas city, most locals travel by walking or cycling. The city sits on a narrow peninsula, making it walkable. You can rent bikes from local shops. If you plan to explore beyond the city, such as to destinations like Manuel Antonio or Monteverde, a rental car is recommended. The ferry terminal in Puntarenas City is the main gateway to the Nicoya Peninsula, with routes to Paquera and Playa Naranjo. If traveling with a car on the ferry, especially during peak season or holidays, it is advisable to book online in advance.
