Hannibal: Escape from the Courland pocket
In January 1945, the Soviet offensive isolated German forces in Courland (present-day Latvia). Hitler ordered to hold at all costs, but Admiral Dönitz, commander of the Kriegsmarine, secretly launched Operation Hannibal on January 23. This colossal maritime evacuation would use over 1,000 vessels: cargo ships, liners, destroyers, even submarines.
Liepāja became one of the main embarkation ports. Between January and May 1945, nearly 150,000 people transited through its quays: wounded soldiers, German settler families, Nazi administrative personnel. Despite attacks from Soviet aviation and mines, 90% of evacuees reached German ports. This operation saved more lives than Dunkirk.
