Karosta: Last Nazi resistance pocket
Built by the Russians between 1890 and 1906, the Karosta naval base became one of the main German military ports on the Baltic in 1941. Renamed 'Festung Libau', it housed submarines, destroyers and served as a rear base for Operation Barbarossa. Generalmajor Vollrath Lübbe commanded the 218th Infantry Division there.
On May 8, 1945, as Germany officially capitulated, Lübbe refused to surrender and organized resistance in the port's bunkers. His 20,000 men, entrenched behind coastal fortifications, resisted the Soviet assault until May 11. This Courland pocket would be one of the last to fall, three days after the official end of the war in Europe.
