The Livonian Order, a branch of the Teutonic Knights, controlled the Baltic region from 1237 to 1561. These knight-monks fortified the Gauja valley with a unique defensive system: three castles (Sigulda, Krimulda, Turaida) connected by underground tunnels. This revolutionary military architecture allowed troops and supplies to move unseen by the enemy.
The Livonian War (1558-1583) marked the Order's end. Facing Ivan IV's armies, the last knights developed underground evacuation networks. Dietrich von Grüningen, a military architect trained in Prague, supervised these titanic works. His plans, hidden before his death at the siege of Wenden, were never found.
