Vitória — The Hidden Defense Plan

Your quest begins at Palácio Anchieta, built in 1770 as the residence of the Capixaba governors and the seat of the Espírito Santo state government since 1774. This palace, named in honor of Vitória's founder, Mateus Nunes de Siqueira, incorporates defensive fortifications erected during its construction to counter threats of foreign attacks. Continue to Praça João Clímaco, a historic square in downtown Vitória, named after the Espírito Santo governor of the 1920s. Surrounded by 19th-century colonial buildings, this 5,000 m² square was a central point for civil gatherings and a strategic axis. It is close to the Portuguese fortifications erected in 1551, which protected Vitória Bay. Your path then leads to Capela de Santa Luzia, built in 1750 in Portuguese colonial style and restored in 1995. Dedicated to Santa Luzia, patron saint of eyes, this 15 m long chapel also served as a defensive observation post in the 18th century, offering a strategic view of maritime approaches. The 10 m high bell tower housed sentinels who watched over the bay. Ascend Escadaria Maria Ortiz, a monumental staircase of 365 steps built in 1920, connecting the historic center to the Santa Luzia neighborhood.
