After the invasion of Poland in September 1939, Hans Frank was appointed Governor-General of the Polish territories not directly annexed to the Reich. Establishing his capital in Krakow and his personal residence in Wawel Royal Castle, he transformed this symbol of Polish history into a Nazi fortress. Nicknamed the 'butcher of Poland' due to his cruelty and the brutal repression he exercised, Frank was primarily responsible for the extermination of Jews and the repression against the non-Jewish Polish population.
In parallel with political terror, Hans Frank orchestrated an unprecedented cultural plunder.
