Reconstruction After World War II

Warsaw was largely destroyed during World War II, particularly after the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. German forces systematically demolished 85% to 90% of the city's buildings, including historical sites and cultural institutions. This destruction was a reprisal for Polish resistance and aimed to eliminate Polish statehood.

The decision to rebuild Warsaw was made in January 1945 by the communist temporary Lublin government. Reconstruction began in 1944 and continued into the 1970s and 1980s for some landmarks. The Old Town was restored to its late 18th-century appearance, using archival documents and Bernardo Bellotto's 18th-century paintings as guides. This urban reconstruction was recognized by UNESCO, which inscribed the Historic Centre of Warsaw on its World Heritage List in 1980.

Historical Development and Conflicts

Warsaw became the capital of Poland in 1596, when King Sigismund III Vasa moved his court from Krakow. The Krasiński Palace, built between 1688 and 1699, was a Baroque residence commissioned by Jan Dobrogost Krasiński, a voivode of Płock. This era of magnate ambition shaped much of the city's early architecture. Centuries later, the city faced the German occupation. The Warsaw Ghetto, established in October 1940, was the largest Jewish ghetto in occupied Europe, confining over 400,000 Jews. The Ghetto Uprising in 1943 and the subsequent systematic destruction of the ghetto by the Nazis contributed to the city's wartime losses.

• —Mound of the Miła 18 Bunker, Anielewicza Street — Covers the remains of the bunker that served as the headquarters for the Jewish Combat Organization (ŻOB) during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Many fighters, including commander Mordechaj Anielewicz, died here on May 8, 1943.
• —Próżna Street, near Grzybowski Square — One of the few streets in Warsaw that retains its pre-war appearance, with tenement houses that once bordered the ghetto.
• —Nożyk Synagogue, Twarda 6 — The only pre-war synagogue in Warsaw to survive World War II and continue to serve its original purpose. Built between 1898 and 1902 in Neo-Romanesque style.
• —Krasińskich Garden, Krasińskich Square — This Baroque garden, originally part of the Krasiński Palace complex from 1676, became a public park in 1768. It was redesigned in the English landscape style in the late 19th century.
• —Palace of Culture and Science (PKiN) — A Soviet-era skyscraper completed in 1955. It houses cinemas, theaters, and libraries. The viewing terrace on the 30th floor offers city views.

May and September are suitable months to visit Warsaw. These periods offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and competitive prices. Temperatures in May range from 9°C to 20°C. September sees temperatures around 18°C, with fewer crowds and lower hotel prices.

Summer (June-August) is the busiest season, with temperatures reaching 24°C-26°C, higher prices, and more tourists. July is the hottest month, and June can be the wettest. Winter (December-February) is cold, with temperatures often below 0°C and short daylight hours. December has Christmas markets. January and February are the coldest and cheapest months. Avoid November and late February-March due to cold, grey, and wet conditions without snow.

Warsaw Chopin Airport (WAW) is 8-9 km from the city center. City trains (SKM S2/S3 lines) connect to Warszawa Centralna or Warszawa Śródmieście in about 30 minutes, running every 30 minutes. Bus line 175 also connects the airport to central Warsaw in 30-40 minutes.

Warsaw's public transport system includes trams, buses, and a metro. Single fare tickets, time-limit tickets (20, 75, 90 minutes), and short-term tickets (24-hour, 3-day, weekend) are available. Tickets can be purchased at over 800 ticket machines at metro stations, railway stops, interchange junctions, and in most vehicles. They are also available at Passenger Service Points or via mobile phone applications. Validate your ticket upon boarding.

Warszawa Centralna, the main railway station, opened in 1975 and is centrally located at Aleje Jerozolimskie 54, with underground passages to other stations and shopping centers.
