Knossos — Decipher the Minotaur's Prison

🎭Your Mission

You are an aspiring archaeologist, tasked by Arthur Evans to decipher ancient riddles in Heraklion, Crete, in the early 20th century.

Your mission takes you to Heraklion

Dive into the heart of Heraklion, tracing the steps of the legendary King Minos, to decipher the secrets of an ancient labyrinth.

The story that haunts this land

Your quest begins in Eleftherias Square, the heart of Heraklion's historic Venetian quarter. Here, you admire the Morosini Fountain, built in 1628 by the Venetian rector Francesco Morosini. Standing 9 meters tall, it is adorned with lions and mythological animals spouting water from the Almyros springs, brought via a 15 km aqueduct – a modern hydraulic system for its time. This 5,000 m² square, a central gathering point since the 13th century, witnessed historical events such as the Cretan revolt of 1866 against the Ottoman Empire. Your first enigma awaits you here, hidden within the sculptures restored in 1990 after World War II bombings, marking the start of your exploration of Cretan heritage.

Continue your journey to the Arsenali Veneziani, the Venetian shipyards built between 1520 and 1600 along Heraklion's old port. These 22 aligned arsenals, each measuring 40 m long by 10 m wide, could construct two ships per unit and were used for maintaining warships. They remained in use until 1669, the year of the Ottoman conquest by the forces of Eleazar Kretorizos. Today transformed into art galleries and restaurants, these buildings have been classified as historical monuments since 1960. By exploring these maritime vestiges, you decipher the Venetian strategies that defended the indirectly UNESCO-listed Cretan city, before the fall of Candia.

The route then takes you to the Koules Fortress, built by the Venetians between 1523 and 1540 on the Byzantine foundations of an ancient lighthouse. This 20-meter-high fortress, with 2 floors and 27 rooms, and walls 2.5 meters thick, could accommodate 70 cannons. It withstood the Ottoman sieges from 1648 to 1669, and was named «Koules» by the Turks. Since 1995, it has housed a naval museum, accessible by a 10-meter wooden bridge. As you walk its ramparts, you discover the ingenuity of the Venetian defenses that protected the entrance to Heraklion's port, a strategic point in Crete.

Your exploration of Cretan heritage leads you to the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, founded in 1904. The current buildings, constructed between 1962 and 1967 after an earthquake in 1957, house the most complete Minoan collection in the world. Across 7,500 m² of exhibition space and 4,000 m² of climate-controlled reserves, you will find 90% of the artifacts from the Palace of Knossos, including frescoes, Linear B tablets, and the famous Phaistos Disc. Classified as «European Museum of the Year» in 2001 by the Council of Europe, this site is essential for understanding Minoan civilization and the role of Minos, legendary king of Knossos. Here, you will decipher ancient symbols, keys to your quest.

After exploring the riches of Heraklion, your treasure hunt guides you to the Palace of Knossos. There, you will discover the remains of King Minos's residence, excavated by Arthur Evans starting in 1900. Passing through the South Propylaeum and the Throne Room, you will understand the complex organization of this site, associated with the myth of the Minotaur and the Labyrinth designed by Daedalus. The Pillar Crypt, a place of ancient rituals, will reveal the final keys to your mission. This visit to Knossos, whether with family or solo, will allow you to immerse yourself in the history of Crete, from its Venetian monuments to its Minoan past, an unforgettable thematic circuit to discover the history of Heraklion and its surroundings.

Frequently asked questions

Q01What's the difference with a regular indoor escape room?

Outdoor escape game format: no physical locks, no actor, no fixed time slot. You start when you want, progress through Heraklion and Knossos with your phone, and the city itself is the set. More immersive on local history, more flexible in pace.

Q02What walking pace should we expect?

Easy stroll: between stops you walk 3 to 7 minutes. No tough climbs unless flagged on the product page. If you really want to push, you can jog between stops, but that's not the point.

Q03Do we need to be several people to enjoy it?

No, solo works very well. The outdoor escape game format in self-guided mode leaves room for introspection: read the story at your pace, hunt clues like a detective. 2-6 players is more social, solo is more contemplative.

Q04Best season to explore Heraklion and Knossos like this?

Spring and autumn are the best seasons: mild temperatures, fewer tourists, gorgeous light. Summer is also great but go for early morning before 11 or late afternoon. Winter is perfectly playable, especially in southern cities — Heraklion and Knossos often feels more authentic then.
