Two thousand years of History on one island
📱 1 to 10 phones · 1 team per phone · Independent codes
From the Conciergerie where Marie-Antoinette awaited her execution to the stained glass of Sainte-Chapelle that housed the relics of Christ, the Île de la Cité hides beneath its cobblestones the remains of Lutèce, the Roman city that became Paris.
The Île de la Cité has been the beating heart of Paris for over two millennia. It is here that the Parisii settled, that the Romans built Lutèce, that the kings of France dispensed justice, and that the Revolution severed heads. From Marie-Antoinette's cell to the relics of Christ's Passion, every square meter of this island carries the weight of an extraordinary history. Your investigation begins before the Conciergerie — the queen's last residence before the scaffold.
« "I did not mean to step on your foot, sir." »— — Marie-Antoinette, to her executioner, October 16, 1793
Around 250 BC, the Gallic tribe of the Parisii settled on this island naturally protected by the Seine. The Romans conquered it in 52 BC and founded Lutèce, whose remains — baths, forum, dwellings — still sleep beneath the square of Notre-Dame in the Archaeological Crypt.
In the Middle Ages, the island became the center of royal power. Saint Louis had the Sainte-Chapelle built between 1242 and 1248 to house the Crown of Thorns of Christ, purchased at great expense from the Emperor of Constantinople. Its 1,113 stained-glass windows form one of the largest collections of 13th-century stained glass in the world.
During the French Revolution, the Palais de la Cité — former royal residence — became the Conciergerie, the antechamber of the guillotine. Over 2,700 prisoners passed through before their execution, including Marie-Antoinette, who spent her last 76 days in a damp, dark cell before mounting the scaffold on October 16, 1793.
