In 4th-century Caesarodunum, now Tours, Saint Martin—the Roman soldier turned bishop—divided his cloak with a beggar, sparking miracles that drew pilgrims from afar
You are a contemporary historical investigator, summoned to Tours, France, in the modern era, to unravel a centuries-old enigma.
In 4th-century Caesarodunum, now Tours, Saint Martin
853 AD — Longships on the Loire
« Martinus Turonensis, episcopus sanctus, cuius corpus in hac basilica requiescit, totius Galliae lumen est »— Inscription de la basilique Saint-Martin, VIe siècle
Martin of Tours, born in Pannonia around 316 AD, was the third bishop of Caesarodunum, consecrated in 371. A former Roman cavalry officer, he is famous for the episode where he shared his military cloak with a beggar in Amiens. A disciple of Hilary of Poitiers, he founded the monastery of Ligugé then Marmoutier Abbey in 372, playing a major role in the Christianization of the region and the suppression of Gallo-Roman cults.
After his death in 397 AD, his tomb in Tours became one of the greatest pilgrimage centers in the West, after Rome and Santiago de Compostela. The basilica built over his tomb attracted pilgrims from all over Europe, transforming Caesarodunum into a prosperous holy city. But this wealth also attracted the covetousness of the Vikings who, from 853, began their raids on the Loire, forcing the monks to protect the precious relics of the holy soldier bishop.
