The Rocks — Gates of the White Empire

🎭Your Mission

You are a First Fleet cartographer, disembarking at Circular Quay in January 1788 under Governor Arthur Phillip's authority.

Your mission: document every stone, every edifice sealing British control

Dive into 1788 Sydney, where Port Jackson witnessed the birth of the British Empire in Australia, and decode the remnants of its colonial foundation.

« Recently founded, but nevertheless ancient »
Official motto of the City of Sydney, 1906 (referring to 1788)

The story that haunts this land

Your journey begins at Circular Quay, the main entry point for colonial immigration and trade since 1788. It was here, on this 800-meter-long port quay, designed between 1883 and 1903 by engineer John Bradfield, that the First Fleet first set foot. In front of Sydney's Customs House, an Italian Renaissance-style building constructed in 1885 by James Barnet, you observe the seat of the customs administration which, since 1901, controlled the flow of goods and people, symbolizing British imperial power over Port Sydney and the New South Wales colony.

Heading up Macquarie Street, you discover the Chief Secretary's Building, an 80-meter-long sandstone administrative edifice, erected between 1837 and 1845. This Italian Renaissance-style building was the historic seat of colonial administration, representing British executive power in 19th-century Australia. Nearby, Sydney's Parliament House, built between 1811 and 1816 by Francis Greenway, reveals its late Georgian architecture. Home to the Parliament of New South Wales since 1829, it houses the original assembly room with its 1816 coffered ceiling, testifying to the establishment of colonial legislative structures.

Your route then takes you to Hyde Park Barracks, another masterpiece by Francis Greenway, built between 1817 and 1819. This 90-meter-long local sandstone Georgian edifice was designed to house 600 transported convicts, embodying the colonial penitentiary system. Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2010, it is a major site of Australian penal heritage and a poignant testament to Convict Transportation History. This site allows you to understand the scale of the deportation system that shaped early Sydney society.

Heading towards Observatory Hill, you reach the Sydney Observatory, founded in 1858 and built in 1875-1876. Its 7.6-meter dome houses a historic 1874 telescope, used for astronomical observation and time synchronization for the maritime port. This scientific infrastructure of the British Empire in colonial Australia played an essential role in navigation within Port Jackson Heritage. The Rocks Historic District, founded in 1788, then surrounds you, with its sandstone buildings from the 1820s-1840s, named after the rocky formations that guided the first European ships.

Your exploration concludes with the Macquarie Lighthouse, Australia's oldest lighthouse, built between 1818 and 1821 on South Head by Francis Greenway and rebuilt in 1883 to 40 meters high. Named in honor of Governor Lachlan Macquarie, architect of colonial infrastructure from 1810 to 1821, this lighthouse has guided ships for 200 years, ensuring the safety of Port Jackson and the entire Colonial Heritage Australia. This journey will have allowed you to trace the history of Sydney, from its founding by the First Fleet Landing Site 1788 to its development as a center of British Empire Colonial Infrastructure, through a most immersive Sydney interactive visit.

No, never. You get a link, you click, it plays in your browser. That's the point of a PWA: same as an app, without the hassle.

Q02Does it work offline?

GPS yes (handled by your phone). Maps yes (tiles cached). AI and hints need an intermittent 4G connection.

Q03How long does a game take?

1 h 30 to 2 h 30 depending on your pace. The timer runs but only for the leaderboard — you play at your own tempo.

Q04What happens if I'm stuck?

You get 3 levels of hints per puzzle (increasing penalty). If truly stuck, you can skip the step (45-min penalty but you keep going).

Q05What's the age range?

From 12 without an adult, from 6 with an adult reading puzzles. Works for families, couples, friend groups, companies.

Q06What if my city isn't in the catalogue?

Pre-register or contact us — we'll email you as soon as your city is live.

Q07What is augmented reality exactly?

Point your phone at the façade: a historical character appears full-screen and speaks to you in your language. At the puzzle climax, golden letters magically write themselves on the real wall — that's your answer. After each puzzle solved, a treasure chest floats in front of you. Seeing is believing.
