Miami's First Village
In 1873, when Charles Peacock and his family leave Nassau to settle on the southeast coast of Florida, Miami doesn't exist yet. This swampy, tropical region houses only a few Seminoles and rare isolated settlers. The Peacocks, accompanied by Bahamian families expert in navigation and shipbuilding, establish Bay View House — the region's first inn — and a trading post on the shores of Biscayne Bay.
The small village grows through trade with the Bahamas, copal harvesting (tropical tree resin), and subsistence farming. By 1884, Coconut Grove already counts several dozen families when Henry Flagler discovers the region and decides to run his railroad through it. But the Peacocks and the first Bahamian settlers jealously guard their secrets: nautical charts, copal veins, and especially property deeds that could one day be worth a real estate fortune.
