Von Braun and the Space Conquest
In 1945, Wernher von Braun and his Peenemünde team surrender to the Americans with V-2 rocket plans. Transferred under Operation Paperclip, they first settle at Fort Bliss, Texas, then in Huntsville, Alabama. Von Braun quickly becomes the visionary of the American space program, developing Jupiter rockets then the gigantic Saturn V.
On July 16, 1969, Saturn V launches from Launch Complex 39A at Cape Canaveral. This 110-meter, 3000-ton rocket is the culmination of von Braun's genius. Three days later, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the lunar surface while Michael Collins orbits the Moon. America won the space race, but at the price of a Faustian pact with its former enemy.
