Avaricum and the Druidic Mysteries
Bourges, ancient Avaricum, was the capital of the Bituriges, a Celtic people renowned for their wealth and druidic knowledge. In 52 BC, Caesar besieged the city during his final campaign in Gaul. According to legend reported by Pliny the Elder, the druids of Avaricum possessed ancestral knowledge transmitted orally for centuries: knowledge of cosmic cycles, healing properties of plants, and especially the Dagda's prophecy concerning the future of Celtic peoples.
Local traditions in Berry still perpetuate the memory of these talking stones. Eight menhirs were allegedly arranged according to a precise astronomical alignment by the druids before the Roman siege. Each stone contained a fragment of the final prophecy, carved in Celtic ogham. Medieval chronicles from Saint-Sulpice Abbey mention strange phenomena: nocturnal whispers emanating from ancient stones, luminous inscriptions appearing under moonlight.
