Naulakha — Kipling's Lost Manuscript

🎭Your Mission

You are a literary investigator, a century after Kipling's departure from Brattleboro.

In 1893, Rudyard Kipling fled scandal in England, building Naulakha, his Vermont

In Rudyard Kipling's Footsteps: The Naulakha Enigma

« “It is the words that matter, not the man who writes them.” »
Rudyard Kipling, Letters to the Homeland

The Enigma of the Exiled Genius

Rudyard Kipling, already famous for his tales of India, married Caroline Balestier in 1892. They settled near Brattleboro, Vermont, Caroline's home state. There, he built Naulakha, a unique house designed to maximize sunlight and inspiration. It was in this retreat that he wrote his most famous works, both Jungle Books and Captains Courageous, deeply influenced by Vermont's wilderness and New England's maritime life.

However, this idyllic period was shattered by a bitter quarrel with his brother-in-law, Beatty Balestier, which escalated into a public altercation and a lawsuit. Deeply shocked and wishing to protect his family from media scrutiny, Kipling decided to leave the United States in 1896. He sold Naulakha and never returned, leaving behind an unresolved enigma about the true depth of his motivations and the secrets of his American inspiration.

1892
Kipling and Caroline Balestier settle in Brattleboro and begin building Naulakha.
1894
Publication of “The Jungle Book”, largely written at Naulakha and inspired by Vermont.
1896
Lawsuit with Beatty Balestier and Kipling's permanent departure from the United States.
