From Fort to Industrial Hub

Brattleboro's origins date to 1724, with the establishment of Fort Dummer, Vermont's first permanent English settlement. This fort served as a scouting post and trading center, attracting early settlers. In 1753, King George II chartered the area as Brattleboro, named after William Brattle, Jr., a proprietor who never lived in the town.

The town's location at the confluence of the West River and the Connecticut River, with the power of Whetstone Brook, fueled its early industrial growth. Gristmills and sawmills were established. By the 1800s, Brattleboro functioned as a regional trade center, benefiting from stagecoach routes and, in 1849, the arrival of the railroad, which provided a link north. The town's economy relied on the trade of grain, lumber, turpentine, tallow, and pork.

A Town of Innovation and Resilience

During the 19th century, Brattleboro gained recognition for its industries. It became home to several bookbinding companies, including Brattleboro Typographic Company, which produced Bibles. The Estey Organ Company, founded in 1852, became the largest organ manufacturer in the United States, producing over 500,000 church and parlor organs. Henry Ford visited the factory in 1915, drawing inspiration for his assembly lines. The town established Vermont's first public library in 1837 and one of the earliest post offices in the state in 1784.

Brattleboro also developed in medicine and wellness. From 1846 to 1871, it was a resort town, with patrons visiting for its "water cure" spa, which used spring waters. In 1834, the Brattleboro Retreat was established as the Vermont Asylum for the Insane, pioneering humane treatment for mental illness. Major industries declined in the early 20th century, but Brattleboro adapted, becoming an economic hub for surrounding rural communities and a tourist destination.

Fall foliage in Southern Vermont, including Brattleboro, typically peaks in the second and third weeks of October. Winter, from December to February, is freezing and snowy, with January averaging 15°F (-9°C) lows and 32°F (0°C) highs. This season is suitable for skiing and winter festivals. May and September also offer pleasant weather. Avoid January, February, March, November, and December if you prefer milder weather for outdoor activities.

Brattleboro is accessible by car via I-91 (exits 1, 2, and 3), Route 9, and Route 5. Amtrak's Vermonter service connects Brattleboro daily to destinations like St. Albans, VT, and Washington, D.C. Bus service is available via Greyhound. The nearest major airports include Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, CT (80 miles), Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) in Boston, MA (120 miles), and Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT) in Manchester, NH (91 miles).
