The Great Terror in the Urals
In the 1930s, the Soviet Union witnessed massive purges orchestrated by Joseph Stalin and the NKVD. The Urals, a strategic industrial region, became an epicenter of these repressions. Tens of thousands of people—intellectuals, religious figures, peasants, workers, Party officials—were arrested, summarily tried, and executed. In Ekaterinburg (then Sverdlovsk), the Uktus shooting range was one of the places where these secret executions took place. Bodies, often burned and buried in mass graves, were meticulously hidden to erase all traces of these atrocities, imposing a heavy silence on society.
For decades, the truth about these crimes was suppressed. It was only with Perestroika and the fall of the USSR that archives began to open. Mass execution and burial sites, such as Uktus or the 12th kilometer of the Moscow highway, were gradually identified and memorials erected.
