From Fortress to Trade Hub

Chelyabinsk was established on September 13, 1736, as a fortress on the Miass River by Colonel Alexey Tevkelev. Its initial role was to protect trade routes and food convoys to Orenburg, securing the southern borders of the Russian Empire. By 1781, it gained town status. For most of the 18th and 19th centuries, Chelyabinsk remained a small provincial town, focused on trade and crafts, with merchants exchanging grain for skins and livestock with Central Asia.

A significant change occurred in 1892 with the completion of the Samara-Zlatoust Railway, connecting Chelyabinsk to Moscow and European Russia. This was followed by the start of the Trans-Siberian Railway construction from Chelyabinsk in 1892, linking it to Yekaterinburg by 1896. This transformed Chelyabinsk into a major transport and trade center. Its growth was supported by a special customs policy, the "Chelyabinsk Tariff Break," which made it a hub for processing and distributing goods. In the early 20th century, this led to its comparison with "the Chicago of the Urals."

"Tankograd" and Industrial Development

The 1930s brought another transformation for Chelyabinsk under Soviet industrialization plans. The city became an industrial center with the construction of large factories, including the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant in 1933. During World War II, Chelyabinsk's location, distant from German forces, made it a crucial hub for Soviet manufacturing. Many industries were moved eastward to the city, including facilities for producing T-34 tanks and Katyusha rocket launchers. During this period, Chelyabinsk was known as "Tankograd" (Tank City), producing 18,000 tanks and 48,500 tank diesel engines, along with over 17 million units of ammunition. The city's industrial output contributed to the Soviet victory. After the war, the region also played a role in the development of Soviet nuclear weapons.

• —South Ural State University (main building) — This building has neoclassical elements and a central tower. It was designed to resemble Moscow State University. Later additions include two bronze sculptures on the roof representing Prometheus and Nike.
• —Miass River Embankment — Walk along the Miass River to see city views and the water. The Kirovsky Bridge offers a viewing point.
• —Chelyabinsk Opera and Ballet Theatre — This theatre, named after Mikhail Glinka, is an architectural landmark. Its yellow and white facade, supported by eight columns and ornate features, makes it a notable sight.

The period from May to August offers comfortable weather for outdoor activities in Chelyabinsk. July is the warmest month, with average daytime temperatures around 26°C (79°F), and it is also the sunniest. The landscape is green, and days are long, suitable for exploring parks and lakes. September provides autumn colors and fewer people.

Avoid visiting from January to March if you prefer to avoid extreme cold. Daytime temperatures can reach -9°C (16°F) in January, with nighttime lows around -18°C (0°F). While winter brings snow, many outdoor activities are limited to winter sports.

Chelyabinsk is served by Kurchatov Chelyabinsk International Airport (CEK), 18 km north of the city center. The airport has flights from Russian cities and some international destinations. Koltsovo Airport (SVX) in Yekaterinburg is about 166 km away. The Chelyabinsk Railway Station, on Pervozvanzhalnaya Street, is a hub on the Trans-Siberian Railway, connecting the city with European Russia and Siberia.

Within the city, Chelyabinsk has public transport. The city center is walkable, especially areas like Kirovka Pedestrian Street. Buses, trolleybuses, and minibuses operate along main avenues like Lenin Avenue, providing access to landmarks. Parking is available, with costs varying by duration and location.
