The Romanovs' fatal destiny: unravel the thread of a tragic night.
« "I have no doubt that ultimately history will justify me." »— Nicholas II, Letter to Empress Alexandra, July 1918
After Nicholas II's abdication in March 1917, the imperial family was first placed under house arrest in Tsarskoye Selo, then exiled to Tobolsk. Facing the advance of the civil war and the growing threat from anti-Bolshevik forces, the Bolshevik leaders decided to move the Romanovs to the Urals, to Yekaterinburg. They arrived in the city on April 30, 1918, and were housed in the Ipatiev House, a requisitioned and heavily guarded residence, dubbed the 'House of Special Purpose'.
For weeks, the family lived in strict isolation, under the constant surveillance of Cheka guards. As the Czechoslovak Legion approached Yekaterinburg, threatening to liberate the Romanovs, the Ural Soviet, likely under orders from Lenin and Sverdlov, decided on their execution. On the night of July 16-17, 1918, the family and several servants were led to the basement of the Ipatiev House and shot, ending over three centuries of the Romanov dynasty's reign.
