From the Sorbonne to Île de la Cité
The relationship between Heloise and Abelard began around 1115 in Paris. Abelard, a canon and master at Notre-Dame, was then a revered intellectual whose renown attracted students from all over Europe. He was hired as a tutor to young Heloise, niece of Canon Fulbert, known for her exceptional intelligence and mastery of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew. Their clandestine passion, initially hidden, led to the birth of a son, Astrolabe.
The secret marriage of Heloise and Abelard, contracted to appease Fulbert, was soon revealed, leading to the brutal revenge of the canon, who had Abelard castrated. The two lovers then retired to monasteries, Abelard to Saint-Denis, Heloise to the Paraclete, which he founded for her.
