The Legend of the Hortillonnages
The Hortillonnages of Amiens form a vast network of marshes developed from the Middle Ages, probably in the 12th century. These plots of land surrounded by canals called rieux were cultivated by the hortillons, a community of market gardeners who supplied the city with early produce. By the 18th century, they formed a well-organized society with its own rules and traditions.
Local legend tells that the famous Notre-Dame Cathedral of Amiens, whose construction began in 1220, was built on an artichoke field given by the market gardeners. This voluntary sacrifice allegedly enabled the erection of France's largest Gothic edifice, symbolizing the hortillons' generosity toward their urban community.
